Half-Year Check In

Hello! Hello? Can anyone hear me? It’s been how long?
Summer is in full swing. It’s hot. It’s sunny. And it is sooo busy! I have been running around like a crazy person since school let out around Memorial Day, but things should slow down now that we are half-way through the summer. Oyy!
Not only are we halfway through the summer (I am sorry to keep mentioning it), we are also halfway through the year. Does anyone even try to keep up with resolutions at this point? As a teacher, I feel like at this point in the year, I am getting ready to gear up for a “new year” – a new school year, that is. So I need to take a look at myself. Reevaluate, reassess, and make changes, so that I can move on and improve.
Back in January, I told you all about what I was going to do to make 2017 wonderful! Honestly, looking ahead my year did look like it was going to be awesome. I had a distinct action plan with intentional steps to take and milestones to achieve. Then life happened. This year has been great, truly. Not perfect. Not without its struggles. But a good year. Do you know what the first thing to hit the curb when tougher times come though? New Year’s Resolutions. Here I am a full six months later telling you that I have struggled.
Keeping up with blog? FAIL!
Learn French? FAIL!
Getting in shape? FAIL!
Being healthy, amazing, and perfect? FAIL!
Truth be told, I am not very good at New Year’s Resolutions, but there are several things that I have done that I am excited about.
  1. I went on vacation!!!! Reality – Finances arealways a struggle. We are largely debt free, however my husband and I live in a high income area on low income salaries. While we are always thankful for what we have, certain luxuries are hard to come by – like vacation. We were able share a rented ocean-front condo with my family for a week and just relax and do whatever we wanted. The year’s worth of savings paid off! It was so lovely and so relaxing.
  2. I am halfway through my reading goal for the year, at 25 books. I am actually a little behind where I would like to be as far as reading goals, but that’s ok. Also this year has not been my favorite book year. Last year, I read so many good books that it was hard to pick my ten favorite books. This year I am having a hard time picking out two or three.
  3. Fitness has become more a part of my life. I walk about a mile of dedicated exercise a day, but would really like to improve that to my husband and I have largely cut out carbs from our diets. We aren’t insanely strict about carbs (tonight I am having spaghetti and rolls to clear out my pantry and freezer), but we are much more aware of it. For example, we have not eaten pasta in our own home or at restaurants since the end of March. We eat an occasional Nestle ice cream con
e, but don’t buy self-serve ice cream containers that can result in disasterous amounts of dessert. Of course, this doesn’t mean that I skipped birthday cake at family birthday parties or a slice of appetizer bread at a restaurant, but we are very proud of our efforts to limit our intact of carbs. Have we lost weight? Some, but we really need to cut out processed sugar.
  4. I have gotten back into journaling a bit. It’s more a pseudo-bullet journal than it is the “Dear Diary” version. Journaling was such a part of my life from 12-20 years old, that not actively journaling felt like a betrayal of myself. So I have updated the system for the nearly thirty year old me.
As we now move into the second half of the year, I really want to continue growing in all of these areas. You know how it is. There is always room for improvement, so I would like to continue improving. If I have a chance to add in a few things, that would be lovely.
How’s your 2017 going? Hopefully quite well.
